Tips for Golf School Students

Pack your bags, and get ready to have some fun. That is probably the advice you’re getting from your friends when they hear you are off to golf school. While golf school certainly will be fun, there are a few things that you want to make sure remain priorities while you are enrolled. Golf school is a place for people wanting to advance themselves personally, as well as professionally. The first step is to establish some rules, or boundaries that will help one succeed.

Always take notes, no matter what the circumstance, or classroom setting. Taking notes in general is something that is often overlooked by students, and certainly is something overlooked by non traditional students, like those enrolled in golf school. The problem is that people would rather just listen than take notes. Of course, notes are what one should study from when test time starts to roll around. They are important to take, no matter what the circumstance. For some classes, taking notes will be as easy as penning some information on a notepad that is rested on your desk. Other classes however, will pose an issue for the traditional notepad note taking since they are outdoor or interactive classes. It is during these sessions that one should record their notes on a MP3 recorder, or a mini tape recorder. By recording the lecture during class, one will be able to go back and visualize what was taught that day in golf school. Doing this will aid greatly when it is time to prepare for a test, or research assignment.

Maintain a professional attitude, and avoid distractions. There will certainly be a temptation to get distracted by any number of elements. Whether it is a class that is on the course, or a classroom that is full of golf memorabilia or equipment. The point is that you will need to be a professional once golf school is over. It is important to establish a professional attitude during the golf school sessions. Remember the time to get a degree is less than two years. Chances are time will go by faster than one could possibly imagine. Golf school should be a fun time, but it should help to promote a healthy attitude of success and professionalism.

Ask questions at golf school as much as you feel the need. There is no such thing as a dumb question, and those that subscribe to this way of thinking will do well in golf school. The smartest students ask a good amount of questions, because they establish what it is their golf school professors are expecting of them. In order to understand the instructor’s expectations for any given class at golf school one must ask questions. The most amazing element of attending a golf school is the instructors that often work at these schools are experienced PGA certified instructors. Having time with these instructors would literally cost hundreds, if not thousands of dollars. It is important to ask as many questions as one needs to in order to understand what being a Golf professional is all about.

While following the above steps won’t guarantee success, it will certainly increase the chance of it happening. Each piece of advice above comes from teachers and instructors all over the world that constantly deal with a variety of students. If one looks at the advice as a blueprint for the successful student to follow at golf school, they can expect a positive experience.

  1. What can I do to make my golf swing look very professional?
I am a high school student and I am trying out for my school’s golf team. I’m worried that my scores may not be good enough for my schools team (appx. 16 handicap), but I need some tips to at least make my SWING look good. Golfers, any tips would be appreciated

  2. Take all the time you need.

  3. Well, watch the golf channel and practice. Golf is a sport that a 70 year old guy can beat a 20 year old. It is all from practice.

Remember that your drive is one swing, you will spend more time with an iron than with a driver in your hand. It is a mistake people make a lot when at a driving range. And when driving at a driving range, set a target, not a distance. Pick a distance flag, or tree, and see how consistent your aim is with your driver.

  4. Practice in front of a large mirror. Swing in very slow motion. Watch Fred Couples.

  5. Choose a professional golfer, and copy their swing positions. Try to pick a swing from a golfer with the same height as you. If you can repeat their swing positions and weight distributions, you can develop a very similar swing.

Most issues of Golf Digest with have a pull out of a professionals swing shot from 3 different angles.

  6. You don’t want a cool golf swing. If you change your golf swing and it doesn’t feel right, don’t swing like that. I am a basketball/golf player and you should just swing the way you naturally would. A cool swing won’t get you on the golf team.

  7. I would recommend a lesson or two. You can dress for success but that still won’t make you a success. Scoring makes you a success. Learn to score and you can forget what the swing "looks" like. Low scores win, looks don’t
Stick to the basics…grip, club face alignment, stance, posture, proper weight shift on the back swing, proper shoulder turn behind the ball, weight shift forward, allow rear elbow to drop to your hip pocket and follow through with your swing and finish with your belt buckle facing your target and all your weight on your front foot. That is it…..basically.
    Good luck!

I decided it was time that EVERY amateur golfer opened their eyes to the golf swing just like me and join the 1% of golfers who have a swing like the pro’s.

  9. Two things can make you look like a pro overnight, and, eventually help your swing.

The first is STANCE. A "hacker" (forgive the term) is easy to spot on the tee because of his/her stance. Find out what a good stance is (I recommend Hit Down Fundamentals at http://www.hitdowndammit.com or on ebay) and work on that. Believe me, your golf coach will notice, and credit you for potential; something he/she can work with.

The second is, keep your swing compact (short). Again, "hackers" are easy to spot because of their huge backswings, and huge lunges at the ball. Keep your backswing short, and hit down at the ball. (Hackers hit up at the ball, another thing your golf coach will notice.) Short sweet swings will make you look more professional, lead to overall better shots, and will nurture your swing for the future. Good luck!

  10. Watch the Bobby Jones Movie.

  11. get to work on your short game…its the best way to get your handicap from 16-10.
someone will always hit the ball further than you cause of strength, flexibility etc…BUT you have no excuse not to have the best short game…TRUST ME…i am 3 handicap..played college golf…etc…and its all about the short game !!!

  12. Tempo !……Slow backswing…it has to stop at the top and switch directions anyway, so there is no need to bring it back too fast…it will knock you out of position….Don’t try to swing hard just swing smooth…go Tempo…and finish with a big turn….
Either get video or a full length mirror…go to your local library and get Fred Couple’s tape on Tempo…and swing in front of your mirror…It will happen….But I think he has the Best Tempo
