Clearview Golf Club: William Powell built first African-American owned and operated course in US

When Bill Powell was stationed in Scotland and England during World War II, he played several golf courses there. People weren’t interested in the color of his skin; they were interested in his golf score. But when Powell returned to the US after the war, he was denied access to several US Golf Courses because of his race. In 1946, he decided to build a course where everyone was welcome. Today, Clearview Golf Club in East Canton, OH, stands as the first to be designed, built, owned and operated by an African-American. Bill received the Distinguished Service Award by the PGA of America, its highest honor, in 2009. He died December 31, 2009.
