As a Navy man myself, I have played Golf in 7 different States.
My Picks for the best courses overall is as follows:
1) Nevada - Beautiful courses around the mountains
2) Florida- It's Florida, and has year-round Golf. Maybe that's why some of the best Golfer's today live here.
3) Virginia- Ocean side to Mountain Side and everything in between
4) California- Same as Virginia, but really expensive.
5) Illinois- Lush Greens and plush fairways
6) Oklahoma- Just because I'm from there
7) Texas- Because you can fish on the courses if you want to.
References :
I've got to agree that Michigan not only has some of the best courses in the country, but more playable, nice, competitive, scenic, affordable and available courses than any other state.

How cool is it to have a choice of more than a dozen nice nearby courses to be able to get in 18+ holes after getting out of work at 5pm.?

How nice is it for you and a buddy to be able to walk on to a competitive and playable course on a Saturday morning without havng to begin waiting at 4:30 in the morning.?

High end courses.... Arcadia Bluffs, Bay Harbor, Tullymore to name just 3.

Michigan has got it.
References :
1. Michigan - Arcadia Bluffs, Tullymore, Forrest Dunes, Bay Harbor, Black Lake, Shepherd's Hollow, Red Hawk, Lakewood Shores, Eagle Eye, Belgrade Lakes. 1 Disadvantage - 8-9 month golf season?

2. Hawaii - Mauna Kea, Kapalua, Challenge at Manele, Ko'olau, Kauai Lagoons, Poipu Bay, The Prince Course, Turtle Bay Resort, Makena Resort, Wailea, Hualalai

3. Oregon - Pacific Dunes, Bandon Dunes, Bandon Trails, Crosswater, Running Y Ranch Resort, Pumpkin Ridge, Crosswater - Sunriver, The Reserve Vinyards, Eagle Point, Salishan
References :
I am not a golfer but I have a few observations. First, I have always been led to believe that it's Arizona. My sister used to be married to a golf pro whose job was to travel and teach. They went there on their own vacations to golf. Scottsdale, in particular. Golf pros are nice guys but make poor husband material, FYI. She's not married to him and her golf clubs seldom come out of the trunk nowadays as she is too busy with husband no. 2. Too bad, she used to win tournaments, with all that private tutoring. : )

I live in the great state of NH and there are some lovely ones in this state as well, but they are not year-round and are often hilly, which might be more challenging? I notice more public ones here vs. clubs/private courses like in some other states.

I know people that pay big bucks to belong to clubs and it's very snotty. I think it's more about being snobs together than it is about playing a nice round of golf for the fun of it. The "club" has a nice restaurant where no one can get in without a sport coat and members and their guests only go in. Pretty darn snotty if you ask me. I've been there, done that.
